Sister Wives has been on the air since 2010, but the Browns lived the polygamist lifestyle for years before that. TLC marketed the Browns as one big happy family that just happened to be polygamous. But they never really seemed interested in showing the darker sides.
When Christine Brown left in Season 17, things really started to unravel. The perfect polygamist vision was shattered. However, Kody Brown recently made a stunning confession that caught many viewers off guard.

Sister Wives fans already know that the family has dramatically changed over the previous 17 seasons. From the start, Kody Brown and his family portrayed themselves as a functional polygamist family. But it appears that he was hiding the truth from fans for quite some time.
ET recently obtained exclusive footage of the new season. In it, the family patriarch makes a pretty surprising revelation.
“The first 20 years of our family was pretty dysfunctional. And I think because we wanted to be functional, we had a very different attitude about it,” Kody admits in the newly released Sister Wives clip.
Meri confesses that the tensions have been boiling for a very long time and it shouldn’t surprise anyone. But for some reason, Robyn still seems completely caught off guard by the family’s breakdown.
Robyn alleges that she chose Kody’s family because she believed it would be the perfect place to raise her family. But Meri doesn’t see how Robyn ever believed that.
“If she saw that we were perfect, either we were all really good actors or she had blinders on,” Meri says in the clip. “I don’t know. And I’m not saying that to be rude. We, just, we were not perfect. But we were good.”
Janelle and Christine acknowledge the family broke down a long time ago
Now that Janelle, Christine, and Meri Brown have all split from Kody, they feel a little more comfortable speaking out. In the new clip, Christine and Janelle vocalized that the family really started to crumble when Robyn joined the family.
“We became very separate and the family traditions stopped. And I don’t know, and I’m not accusing Robyn of stopping all the family traditions. I don’t know what happened. I just know us getting together again as a family stopped,” Christine told the cameras.
It appears that each member of the family has a different opinion of the situation and when the family really started to fall apart. But at this point, everyone also seems to agree that their family unit is finished.
