Will Zack Snyder’s ‘Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole’ Traumatize Kids?

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'HooleThe marketing for ‘Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole’ has been remarkably coy about its director. “From the animation studio that brought you ‘Happy Feet’” gets big play in the trailer, and “Based on the best-selling series of novels” also receives prominent mention. Somehow, “The first family film from the director of the extremely violent and not for children ‘Dawn of the Dead,’ ‘300′ and ‘Watchmen’” didn’t make the cut.

Yes, indeed, Zack Snyder is the director of ‘Legend of the Guardians’ and, lest you think his vision would not be stamped on what is ostensibly a kiddie flick, think again. Snyder’s sensibility is readily apparent, especially in the way that the action scenes are edited, allowing for extreme slow-motion shots as owls attack one another, and in the abundance of very tight and extended close-ups. Deeper themes about good vs. evil are woven into the material; a battle-scarred warrior/owl expresses his weariness about endless warfare; mournful music often provides downbeat accompaniment.

Does all that mean that the PG-rated movie is not for kids?
