Watch This: The Russian Giant-Turtle Movie

by admin on January 13, 2010

This one’s been floating around the Internets for a year or so, but we just stumbled across it today and felt compelled to share. It would seem that at some point in the 1980s, the good people of the Soviet Union’s film industry made a movie in which a giant turtle very slowly harasses the Russian army. We have a four-minute clip after the jump, in which you can see just how terrifying a mammoth-sized turtle (which is technically a tortoise, but we are not interested in semantics) can be.

I am genuinely curious to know more details about this film. The various references I’ve found to it online say it’s called Mutant, but an IMDb search for that title yields no plausible results. I certainly don’t recognize any of the actors. I suspect they are not very famous even in Russia — or maybe this is the Russian equivalent of, say, The Towering Inferno, and it’s filled with people who used to be really big stars 30 years earlier. At any rate, if you know what this movie is, please share.

In the meantime, enjoy this four-minute segment, which is not for the faint of heart, or for animal lovers, or for members of the Russian military.
