Disney’s first crack at making a PG film hasn’t aged particularly well (check out those vector graphics! They’re still charming in an old school way, but hardly cutting edge), and as an answer to Star Wars it comes up short. However, boasting a cast that included Anthony Perkins, Maximilian Schell and Ernest Borgnine (!) it certainly wasn’t lacking for star power.
As Wright points out, the film has an odd tone to it, alternating serious sci-fi with comic relief provided by robots Bob and V.I.N.C.E.N.T (voiced by Slim Pickens and Roddy McDowall, respectively), which makes it a strange viewing experience all around. Kids are likely to find the weightiness of the story too much to bear, while adults tend to find the poor man’s versions of R2-D2 and C-3PO annoying.
Problems aside, the director clearly has a soft spot for the film (as do many of us who first saw it as a child) and his enthusiasm is infectious. Visit Trailers From Hell to watch Wright wax poetic about one of his favorite films — which like everything else these days is scheduled for a remake.
