In the premiere episode of ‘Oprah Presents Master Class’ (Sun., 10PM ET on OWN), Diane Sawyer recounted an interview she held nearly 20 years ago with then-president of Iraq Saddam Hussein. It was his first interview on Western television in a decade.
The venerable reporter said she realized that dictators like Hussein, “start hearing only what [they] want to hear. And so [they] become increasingly ignorant of the real world.” Sawyer asked him, “Why do you put people in jail if they criticize you?” He replied, “You do the same thing in America.”
The ABC World News anchor then concluded that he didn’t think the U.S. would invade. “He really did not believe it — because those around him had continued to tell him what he wanted to hear.”
