Connelly and Kinnear Find ‘Salvation’ with Marisa Tomei

by admin on March 22, 2010

Almost two years after Salvation Boulevard scored George Ratliff as writer and director, the project is finally taking shape. Variety reports that Jennifer Connelly and Greg Kinnear have joined the project, Marisa Tomei is in negotiations to star, and the roster already includes Pierce Brosnan, Jim Gaffigan, and Ed Harris.

When news hit, Larry Beinhart’s (American Hero, which became Wag the Dog) novel was described as “a mystery about a private investigator hired to find the killer of a college professor that becomes an exploration of religious faith when it turns out that the professor was an atheist, the P.I. is a born-again Christian, the main suspect is a Muslim student, and the defense attorney is a Jew.” That’s pretty much what’s outlined in the book’s summary, but all recent reports describe the tale much more simply, stating that the film “centers on a former Deadhead turned born-again Christian who finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church who will do anything to protect their larger-than-life pastor.”

The rest wiped out to focus on Christian fundamentalists? Purposefully vague second-summary? I’m not sure, but hopefully the latter, as a journey through many faiths intermingling sounds more interesting than zeroing in on one. Whatever the case, the mixture of talent is sure to make it an indie to keep an eye on. Production begins in April.
